THE FOUNDER
On August 18th, 1912 in Sofia “The Bulgarian-Czech Shareholding Company For Sugar Industry” was established.
The company’s founder was Eng. Rudolf Pitzka and the principal shareholder was The Prague Credit Bank.
THE BEGINNING
That same year, a 550 decare plot was purchased near Gorna Oriahovitsa.
A rapid construction began. The development and manufacture of the equipment was assigned to the best Czech companies.
THE WARS
The break of the Balkan War posed major difficulties. The builders wеre called up.
Tens of railway cars with Czech-imported equipment remained on the railway stations in Bulgaria and Serbia.
THE CHALLENGE
On June 14th, 1913 the strongest earthquake in the history of Gorna Oriahovitsa began. Some of the factory buildings were demolished, the equipment remaining under the rubble.
The company management mobilized. The factory was restored through a round-the-clock effort.
SUCCESS
On December 8th, 1913 The Sugar Factory in Gorna Oriahovitsa began its first campaign.
This was the most modern sugar-producing factory in Bulgaria.
The equipment and technology were at top world level.
GROWTH
In order to utilize the molasses - a waste product from sugar cane processing - an ethyl alcohol production factory was built in 1923.
In 1926 a carbon dioxide production facility was added to the factory.
NEW OPPORTUNITIES
In 1927 the nearby confectionery factory was bought.
New factories were built, producing pottery, heating equipment, glucose, potassium carbonate, dry fodder.
NATIONALIZATION
In 1948 the company was nationalized. It was renamed to “State ZAHARNI ZAVODI“.
The Czech state was compensated with vacations on the Black Sea coast, at the purpose-built St. St. Constantine And Elena resort.
ENTHUSIASM
The state management came with enthusiasm and desire for change. Fundamental productions were re-constructed. Some of the existing facilities closed down.
New factories began being built.
IN-HOUSE ENERGY
On January 1st, 1960 construction of in-house thermal-electric power station began. The project was backed by the entire might of the socialist state.
2 000 builders , 7 excavators, 3 cranes and 35 trucks worked on three shifts. On October 20th, 1960 the station was completed and entered exploitation.
MACHINERY CONSTRUCTION
In 1969 the Mechanical Repairs Factory was built.
The facility was aimed at catering for the needs of all sugar and confectionery factories in Bulgaria which at that time were part of the “Bulgarska zahar” economic entity.
PRINTING AND PACKAGING
In 1970 one of the largest polygraphy bases in Bulgaria was built.
The facility was personally opened by Todor Zhivkov.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Parallel to establishing new production facilities, the state also invested in improving the environment.
The park, existing since 1914 was improved and cultivated.
A football stadium was built in it, as well as sports grounds and a swimming pool.
PRIVATIZATION
In 2002 the company was fully privatized with Bulgarian capital only.
It is now a public company with over 1,600 shareholders. Its shares are traded at The Sofia Stock Exchange.
NEW BEGINNING 2002-2017
More than BGN 94 million were invested in the company.
The basic productions were modernized. International quality standards were implemented.
